Takahashi's design is a unique blend of form and function. The cover design, created using blind embossing, stands out with a shadow-like texture that contrasts with the bumpy surface. The embossing was performed twice on the front cover, spine, and back cover to make the title stand out. This technique was chosen to avoid ripping the paper and to create deep impressions. The result is a book that is not only visually striking but also tactilely engaging.
The design's unique properties lie in its ability to visually express the author's thought process. The book aims to make ancient myths understandable to modern readers, and Takahashi's design reflects this goal. The cover opens a door to the author's multi-layered thoughts, indicating the book's intention to unveil the essence of the myths.
The book is designed to be a part of the reader's living space, fitting seamlessly on a bookshelf or in a desk drawer. This consideration for the reader's lifestyle is a testament to Takahashi's thoughtful approach to design. The book measures 194mm x 136mm x 37mm, with 392 pages, making it a compact yet substantial volume.
The design process began in May 2017 in Japan and ended in July 2017. Takahashi's research included studying the ecosystems of various books, from those lining bookstore shelves to leather-bound bibles. The aim was to create a book that readers could keep on hand as they conduct years of research, considering factors such as how the book would feel when held and its usability.
Takahashi overcame creative challenges by introducing shadow into the design, adding a new element to conventional graphic design. The shadow effect, created using embossing alone, transcends two dimensions, demonstrating Takahashi's innovative approach to design.
The Platinum A' Design Award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology. Takahashi's design for "The Way of Knowledge and the Holy Spirit" is a fitting recipient of this prestigious award, embodying the defining aesthetics of an era and making the world a better place.
